Packing for Paradise: Your Maldives Checklist
Packing for the Maldives is all about embracing a "less is more" philosophy. Life here is casual, and you'll spend most of your time in or near the water. Here’s a guide to help you pack smart.
Clothing
- Swimwear: Bring at least two or three swimsuits.
- Lightweight Clothing: Cotton and linen shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, and sundresses are perfect for the tropical climate.
- Cover-Ups: A sarong, kaftan, or light shirt is essential for walking to and from the beach or pool.
- Modest Attire: If you plan to visit local islands or the city of Malé, women should bring clothing that covers their shoulders and knees out of respect for the local culture.
- Evening Wear: A couple of smart-casual outfits for dinners. Think linen trousers, collared shirts, or elegant maxi dresses.
Footwear
You'll likely be barefoot most of the time. However, pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals for walking around and a pair of reef shoes for exploring rocky shorelines or protecting your feet from coral.
Health & Sun Protection
- Reef-Safe Sunscreen: High SPF is a must. Choose a brand that is safe for coral reefs to protect the delicate marine ecosystem.
- After-Sun Lotion: Aloe vera gel is great for soothing sun-kissed skin.
- Sun Hat & Sunglasses: Essential for protection against the strong equatorial sun.
- Insect Repellent: Especially for the evenings, one with DEET is effective.
- Basic First-Aid Kit: Include antiseptic wipes, bandages, and pain relievers.
Electronics
A waterproof camera or phone case is perfect for capturing underwater memories. A power bank is also useful for charging devices on day trips. The Maldives uses Type G plugs (the same as the UK), so bring an adapter if needed.
